Do you have the documentation needed for discussions with financial institutions about sustainability?

Every company is a city. Every city thrives on relationships. Relationships with banks to finance growth. Relationships with investors to assess future capital growth. Relationships with business partners who choose whom they want to work with. Relationships with customers who increasingly ask what stands behind the products they buy. These relationships are not just business. They are the foundation on which the city stands.

And that is precisely where a different kind of dragon has declared he or she is interested to participate as well.

This dragon does not have a name that sounds dangerous. He or she carries a long name, namely, a lack of credible sustainability data. This dragon cannot be seen from a distance. This dragon does not come with noise. However, when a bank requests an ESG report as a condition for a loan, when a major customer sends an EcoVadis questionnaire as a condition for continued collaboration, when an investor requests EU taxonomy alignment of a project as a condition for investment, the city that does not have that data stops. Your company operates well, but lacks sufficient proof for it.

The consequences are not abstract.

Companies without structured sustainability reporting pay a higher cost of capital because banks cannot assess their ESG risk. Such companie might lose supplier contracts with corporations that have their own CSRD obligations and request data from the entire supply chain. These companies might be excluded from EU fund tenders that require proven taxonomy alignment. A city that does not speak the language of sustainability becomes invisible in a market that is speaking that language ever so loudly.

My name is Ana Radovčić, founder of Net.studio Aranea d.o.o. I help companies build credible annual sustainability reporting that meets the requirements of various frameworks and turns data into a business advantage.

CSRD and ESRS standards are the mandatory framework for companies that fall within the scope of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. ESRS standards prescribe what must be measured, how it must be presented and what must be disclosed. For companies for which CSRD is not yet mandatory, ESRS provides a structure that prepares them for the moment it becomes so. An annual business sustainability report according to ESRS standards is not just a document for the regulator. It is a signal to the market that your city knows where it stands and where it is going.

The VSME standard is the version for small and medium-sized enterprises. Easier to apply, but equally structured. Companies using VSME can respond to the requirements of large buyers and banks requesting ESG data from their suppliers, without the burden of full CSRD reporting. It is a framework that gives the city a voice in conversations where it would otherwise remain silent.

The EcoVadis assessment is an internationally recognised sustainability rating system required by global buyers and corporations as a condition for a supplier relationship. The EcoVadis medal is not an honorary recognition. It is an entry ticket to certain supply chains. Preparation for the EcoVadis questionnaire requires structured data on environment, labour, ethics and sustainable procurement. Without preparation, the result reflects a reality a company may not wish to show.

The EU Taxonomy is a framework that defines which economic activities, projects and buildings are considered environmentally sustainable according to European criteria. Alignment with the EU Taxonomy opens access to green bonds, taxonomy funds and EU financial instruments that require a proven green investment component. For building renovation projects, energy projects and infrastructure investments, taxonomy alignment is increasingly not an option, but a requirement.

Your city has data. It has invoices, contracts, consumption records, supplier information. What it lacks is the methodology to organise that data into a structured annual report that banks read, investors evaluate, and business partners request.

The dragon of missing credible data does not disappear by being ignored. But a city that faces it with a well-prepared report opens doors that are closed to others.
